PC-Speaker Drivers for use with Plug-In for Windows
===================================================

Introduction
------------

This archive contains a set of drivers which will allow you to utilize
all of Plug-In's sound capabilities using the standard PC-Speaker.
Please note that this archive is packaged as a courtesy to users of
our products (Plug-In for Windows) and is not intended for general
  distribution.

This archive includes two drivers, the PC-Speaker driver from
Microsoft and a PC-Speaker driver from John Ridges.  The driver
from Microsoft has a little more control than the one from John
Ridges.  In particular, it allows you to disable interrupts,
which provides for cleaner playback.  However, the Microsoft
driver does not support MCI, which is needed for Plug-In's
talking clock.  MCI support is provides by John Ridges' driver.

So, there are three options available to you:

  1) Install both drivers.  As long as you install the Microsoft
driver before the John Ridges driver, you will get the benefits
of both drivers.  We have tested this approach and it appears
     to work without problems.

  2) Install only the John Ridges Driver.  This will allow you to
play all sounds.  However, Interrupts are always enabled, which
means that the sound may be scratchy if you do something which
generates interrupts (such as moving your mouse).  The benefit
of leaving interrupts enabled is that you will be less likely
to have other problems with comm and network programs.

  3) Install only the Microsoft Driver. This option will not allow
you to play the Plug-In talking clock.

Instructions for use:
---------------------

  1) Unarchive the contents of PISPEAK.ZIP to a floppy disk
or temporary subdirectory on your hard drive.

  2) Run the Windows Control Panel. (Usually in the "Main" group.)
     Double click the "Drivers" Icon.

  3) Click the [Add...] button in the "Drivers" dialog box.

  4) Select "Unlisted or Updated Driver" in the list box labeled
"List of Drivers" and click the [OK] button.

  5) Type the path to the directory containing SPEAKER.DRV or
SPEAKR.DRV in the edit field and click the [OK] button.

  6) If you want to install both drivers, select "Sound Driver for
PC-Speaker" and click the [OK] button.  If you only want to
install the John Ridges Driver (or if you already have the
Microsoft driver installed), select "Ridges Sound Driver for
PC-Speaker" and click the [OK] button.

  7) You will see a dialog for Setup. For now just click the [OK] button,
later you can modify the settings if you wish.

  8) Setup will ask if you wish to restart Windows.  If you are installing
both drivers, select "Don't Restart Now" after installing the Micrsoft
Driver and return to step 6 to install the John Ridges Driver.

  8) Restart Windows.

  9) Note that once you have installed these driver(s), you may remove
the setup files from the temporary directory on your hard disk.
However, you should save PISPEAK.ZIP in case you need it in the
     future.

Notes for the Microsoft Driver
------------------------------

The PC Speaker driver may not produce high quality
sound on all computer systems.  The performance
of the PC Speaker driver is largely dependent upon
the hardware itself.  Microsoft does not guarantee
that the speaker driver will work with all
  computer systems.

"Enable interrupts during playback" Setup Option
  ------------------------------------------------
By default, the PC Speaker driver disables all
interrupts while playing sounds for optimal sound
quality.  As a result, you will noticed that the
mouse cursor, keyboard or other processes will not
respond while sounds are being played through the
PC Speaker.  You can set PC Speaker to enable
interrupts for serial port activity and mouse
movements in the PC Speaker setup dialog, at the
  expense of sound quality.

  To set this option:

      - Run Control Panel
      - Open the Drivers icon
      - Select the Sound Driver for PC Speaker from
        the list of Installed Drivers
      - Choose Setup
      - Select or clear the Enable interrupts during
        playback check box.

Note: It may be necessary to select this option when
  running some communication applications.

Notes for John Ridges Driver
----------------------------

Like the Microsoft speaker driver, this Internal Speaker driver
plays exclusively, so Windows will not run programs or respond to
the user while sounds are playing. Unlike the Microsoft driver,
interrupts are not disabled, so you don't have to worry about
losing COMM port data or network connections. Even though it
sounds OK with the interrupts enabled, if you do anything that
causes a lot of interrupts (such as moving the mouse) the sound
  quality will suffer.

drivers in the file TEXT.ZIP, included with this archive.  It contains
